ASHEVILLE – At its regular meeting Monday, Aug. 26, Asheville City Council approved an ordinance that would expand the areas where panhandling is restricted. The city’s police department can only issue a citation to appear in court for violation of either of the two ordinances dealing with public solicitation.
This ordinance will return to city council for a second vote at the September 9th meeting, as a recent state law requires any ordinance with a criminal penalty to pass 2 votes before being enacted.
According to Blue Ridge Public Radio, Kim Roney was the sole city council member to vote against the ordinance.
