PUBLIC NOTICE

North Carolina Emergency Management (NCEM) is partnering with Brunswick, New Hanover, Onslow, and Pender counties to update the Southeastern North Carolina Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan and wants residents input.

The Southeastern NC Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan helps communities prepare for and more easily rebound following a natural disaster. Your insight is vital to ensure the updated plan reflects the unique needs and priorities of our communities.

Residents within these four counties are invited to take a short public survey to provide feedback as part of the update to the plan.

Community members are also encouraged to register online for a free virtual public meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, 2025. This meeting provides a platform for open dialogue where you can share your experiences, help identify risks, and weigh in on strategies that protect our region.

For questions regarding these public input opportunities or to learn about more ways you can participate in the Southeastern NC Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan update, contact Project Manager Nathan Slaughter with ESP Associates, Inc.

About the Southeastern North Carolina Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan

The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires state, tribal, county, and local governments to have an approved and adopted mitigation plan to be eligible for Federal disaster and non-disaster grant programs.

Hazard mitigation plans help communities become less vulnerable to natural disasters by identifying and assessing regional hazard risks and developing strategies that determine how to best minimize or manage those risks.

The Southeastern NC Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan is one of 30 regional multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plans in North Carolina. Required updates are managed and funded by NCEM through grant funding.

The Southeastern NC Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan was last updated in 2021 and must be updated, approved, and adopted every five years.

The update process includes a thorough community-level review of natural hazard risks and potential impacts, capabilities, and a review and updating of mitigation goals and actions established in previous plan editions.
